Highlights from the EOSC Symposium

At the recent EOSC Symposium in Berlin, the long-awaited EOSC EU Node launch took place. Together with the developments of the EOSC Federation, this Node with its first concrete services will help to communicate the EOSC initiative to research communities and stakeholders across Europe in a more accessible and easier way, marking a significant step towards Open Science implementation.

Milestone: Launch of the EOSC EU Node

The EOSC Symposium in Berlin, opens an external URL in a new window (October 21-23) marked the official launch of the EOSC EU Node, opens an external URL in a new window, showcasing its potential to enhance the development of an integrated and effective digital research ecosystem.

As a major building block in the EOSC Federation, the EOSC EU Node aims to accelerate the adoption of Open Science and FAIR across Europe. It offers services and tools such as Bulk Data Transfer, Large File Transfer, Virtual Machines, Cloud Container Platform, Interactive Notebooks, and File Sync & Share. The services not only facilitate collaboration across borders but also enable researchers to work with large-scale data, develop advanced simulations, and execute complex computations—all within a secure and highly integrated environment. Researchers affiliated with European research institutions can, upon registration, use these services via credits. Frequently mentioned reports

The opening session provided the participants with an overview of the landscape in which EOSC operates and highlighted the strategic importance of the EOSC initiative in the EU Data Strategy. In this context, the keynote speakers pointed to two recent, relevant reports:

The EOSC Federation

Many sessions in the Symposium featured around the build-up phase of the EOSC Federation, opens an external URL in a new window. The Federation will consist of multiple EOSC Nodes that are interconnected and can collaborate to share and manage scientific data, knowledge, and resources within and across thematic and geographical research communities. The EOSC Nodes will be entry points for users to the EOSC Federation, with each node offering its own and possibly third-party services, including data reposing and accessing services.

The EOSC Federation Handbook, opens an external URL in a new window will comprehensively address the purpose, structure, governance, architecture and operations of the EOSC Federation. The public consultation of the Handbook is currently running until 17th November 2024.

Materials and outcomes from the Symposium

While a large part of the programme dealt with the EOSC EU Node and more general topics related to the EOSC Federation, the parallel ‘Unconference’ also focused on topics such as Competence Centres and Open Science Skills and Training. Key takeaways and slides from these sessions are available on the website

TU Wien involvement in EOSC

TU Wien is currently partner in three EOSC-related Horizon Europe projects:

Additionally, TU Wien is member in the EOSC Association, opens an external URL in a new window and on local level in the EOSC Support Office Austria, opens an external URL in a new window.
