Physics of Science Fiction
Jules Verne: The shot at Kilimanjaro
In Verne’s novel, a group of investors decides on nothing less than shifting the Earth’s axis by firing a giant cannon, so that they can mine coal beneath the melted polar ice.
The Euler oscillation (click here to view the simulation, opens an external URL in a new window) of the Earth’s ellipsoid generates a tidal range of up to 15 km with a period of around 10 months. (The flattening is greatly exaggerated in the simulation.)
