The research unit of  Production Engineering covers a wide range of topics. It is divided into four research focuses, which are represented by the following research groups.

The research group's scope includes not only the primary focus on machining processes but also additive and forming manufacturing processes.

In addition to investigating the fundamentals of innovative manufacturing technologies such as high-performance machining, friction surfacing, or mechanical surface hammering, the group develops industrial applications based on the insights gained. A significant aspect is the model-based representation of real processes. New approaches to model the highly dynamic material behavior and determine parameters, for example, to describe the contact between workpiece and tool in the simulation of cutting processes, serve as the foundation for this research.

The activities in the field of machine tools primarily encompass the design, calculation, metrological analysis, and optimization of machine tools and their components and assemblies.

Innovative approaches are also pursued in the development of flexible, reconfigurable manufacturing systems.

The core tasks of this research group include the development and optimization of machine tools, as well as the metrological analysis and evaluation of manufacturing facilities.

With the increasing digitalization of the European industry, integration topics are becoming increasingly important for companies.

Especially the vertical integration of production systems from the field level to the cloud (Digital Production Working Group) as well as the horizontal integration along the product life cycle (Virtualization of Process and Machine Working Group) focusing on paperless product definition, feature technology in CAM programming, and the topic of Digital Twin, provide promising approaches.

Sustainability assessment and measures for closing material cycles (Energy Efficiency Working Group) also cover leading topics within the context of our society's transition to achieve climate goals.

Due to the rapid advancement of current production processes, production metrology has been facing new challenges in recent years.

Automated manufacturing techniques and emerging technologies like additive manufacturing are being employed to achieve efficient production while meeting the highest quality standards, allowing the creation of geometries that were once considered impossible.

Increasingly, quality-determining measurements are being carried out directly in the production line or within the manufacturing process itself, integrating them seamlessly into the production process.
