The UN Programme on Space Applications and UN-SPIDER: bringing space technology and EO data to all countries

The lecture will introduce the UN’s Office for Outer Space Affairs, opens an external URL in a new window (UNOOSA) and its broader roles, and present the two UN Programmes established by the UN General Assembly to focus on building capacity of countries to access and use space technologies and space data for addressing their various development challenges.

It will touch on the history and reach of these programmes, the main activities including capacity building of national government experts, the knowledge management aspects that are key in disseminating information on available space solutions and raising awareness globally about those.

The UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal, opens an external URL in a new window will be introduced as an example of knowledge sharing and presenting best practices in using space technology for disaster management.

The lecture will also touch on the collaboration (both commercial and in-kind) of the UN system with commercial satellite data providers, data access, sharing and licensing aspects, the inter-agency coordination mechanisms and partnerships with external expert bodies such as CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) or GEO (Group on Earth Observations) partnership.
In closing, we will look into the increasing number of planned satellite constellations and the Petabytes of new data becoming available soon from multiple countries, and linked to that the importance to adopt new ways of working with / analysing such data in the cloud and using ML and AI approaches.
