Transformative agreements with publishers on open access articles in subscription journals
Publishing open access articles in subscription journals (hybrid open access) incurs double the costs, as the publishing companies charge publication fees to authors and subscription fees to institutions.
TU Wien Bibliothek is negotiating open access components more and more frequently and concludes what are known as transformative agreements with publishing houses. This provides members of TU Wien with the opportunity of making their publications freely accessible around the world in established journals as soon as they are published. Invoicing is conducted centrally by TU Wien Bibliothek. However, outside the publisher agreements specified below, the library does not assume any costs for hybrid open access, due to cost issues.
We advise using the official e-mail address for any submission or doing this within the University's IP domain, to ensure direct billing through TU Wien Bibliothek. TU Wien Bibliothek bears the costs of publication and also uploads all its funded articles to reposiTUm, opens an external URL in a new window.
Requirements for funding
- The submitting/corresponding author is a member of TU Wien and is responsible for payment of the publication fee. If there are several corresponding authors, the TU Wien corresponding author has to be the submitting author.
- Publication is subject to an open licence, for instance in the form of a Creative Commons licence. The journal must apply open licences and display them correctly.
- Financing by TU Wien Bibliothek must be mentioned in the acknowledgements. We would recommend the following wording: "The authors acknowledge TU Wien Bibliothek for financial support through its Open Access Funding Programme."
Note that some transformative agreements include publications where publication costs were already covered by external funds or by project funding from bodies such as FWF or ERC, whereas other agreements do not include these publications. This information is given in the "special conditions" section for each publisher below.
