Around 800 students from different (technical) high schools in Vienna and other parts of Austria took part in the Open Doors Day of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of  TU Vienna. After a general presentation of the study courses offered at the faculty and a lecture on a selected topic, the pupils had the chance to visit labs of interest and get a sneak peek behind the curtains of  modern research.

At the Photonics Institute, Stefan Hässler and Raffael Maurer gave a presentation on controlled light: „From the Light Bulb to the Gigawatt-Ultrashort-Pulsed Laser“.

Franz Trawniczek from Prof. Wintner’s lab talked about laser ignition in Otto-motors and demonstrated the power of the laser.

And Dominic Bachmann and Juraj Darmo from THzlabs, opens an external URL in a new window gave a presentation on „THz Waves: When the Invisible Enables the Vision“ that showed the potential of this still underexploited part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The pupils had the possibility to gain insight into modern laser research and took the opportunity to ask questions and get to know more about these upcoming technologies.

All in all, it was an enrichment for both sides and we hope to see at least some of these pupils again as future students!

Thank you to everybody who contributed to make this day an interesting and worthwile event!
