Georg Schitter
Short Curriculum Vitae
Georg Schitter is Professor and Chair for Advanced Mechatronic Systems at the Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) in the School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of TU Wien, Austria. Prof. Schitter received an M.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) from the Graz University of Technology, Austria, in 2000 and a M.Sc. (Information Technology) and a Ph.D. in Technical Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in 2004. From 2004-2006 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Paul Hansma at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB). In 2006 he became Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and became Associate Professor for Mechatronic Systems in 2009. Since 2010 he holds the Chair for Advanced Mechatronic Systems at TU Wien. He received further offers for faculty positions at the University of Hawaii (2006), University of Waterloo (2006), Universität Ulm (2009) und an die ETH Zürich (2013).
His primary research interests are on high-performance mechatronic systems and multidisciplinary system integration, particularly for precision engineering applications in the high-tech industry, scientific instrumentation, and mechatronic imaging systems that require precise positioning combined with high bandwidths. Application domains of his research are telescope systems and adaptive optics, scanning probe microscopy (AFM), scanning laser metrology, robot-based measurement systems and modular automation, lidar systems for automated driving, and lithography systems for semiconductor industry. Since 2015 he has been heading the Christian Doppler Laboratory „Precision Engineering for Automated In-Line Metrology“, opens an external URL in a new window.
Georg Schitter is author of more than 260 peer-reviewed scientific publications (ORCID ID , opens an external URL in a new window), of which more than 120 have been published in international journals, and he co-authored the textbook “The Design of High-Performance Mechatronics, opens an external URL in a new window”. Among several others his international scientific service duties include Associate Editorships at various journals of IFAC and IEEE as well as the co-organisation of international conferences. For his research Georg Schitter received several prestigious fellowships and awards, among them Scholarships of the FWF and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the NWO-Veni-Award (STW, The Netherlands), the 2013 Young Researcher Award of the IFAC TC Mechatronics, as well as best paper awards from the IFAC Journal Mechatronics, the Asian Journal of Control, and the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.
