8 weeks prior to the PhD defence - get approval from the examination senate and reviewers

Please mail the „, opens a file in a new windowApplication for the Doctoral Examination (PDF)“, opens a file in a new window form for approval by the Dean of Students to christoph.neuherz@tuwien.ac.at.

The examination senate consists of at least three and at most five habilitated persons. The supervisor of the dissertation must always be appointed as a member of the examination board, and, if possible, the reviewers should also be part of the examination board. The chairmanship of the examination board is organized by the Dean's Office.

One reviewer should be a member of the TU Wien and at least one reviewer should be a member of another faculty of the TU Wien or another university or an external research institution.

7 weeks before the PhD defence - Organize PhD defence appointment.

After the approval of the examination senate by the Dean of Studies, a PhD defence meeting with all examiners has to be organized. Please allow sufficient time for the review of your dissertation.

7 weeks before the PhD defence - submission of the submission documents.

Please send the following documents by mail to christoph.neuherz@tuwien.ac.at:

  • signed curriculum vitae incl. list of publications
  • Birth certificate or passport
  • Notification of the academic degree of the previous studies
  • Leaflet for Authors of a Thesis (PDF)
  • Copy of the 1st page of the dissertation
  • current study sheet
  • „Anouncement of a doctoral thesis (PDF)“ form signed by the dean of studies
  • LVA certificates for 18 ECTS credits
  • Date of birth, nationality and academic degree of external reviewer(s)
  • Statistics Austria Confirmation
  • PDF of the dissertation
  • possibly admission letter
  • possibly request for restriction of use of the dissertation

6 weeks before the PhD defence - sending the dissertation for review

The dissertation will now be sent out to the reviewers by the Dean's Office for review.

4 weeks before PhD defence - create thesis in TISS.

Your supervisor must create the thesis in TISS under "Theses".

1 week before the PhD defence - submission of dissertation

Two hard-bound dissertations are to be handed in at the Dean's Office at least one week before the viva. Please arrange an appointment with Christoph Neuherz in this regard.

PhD defence

The PhD defence includes a presentation of 30 to 45 minutes, as well as a subsequent defense of the dissertation before the examination senate.

2 weeks after the PhD defence - collection of final documents

You will be notified approximately two weeks after the viva regarding the collection of the final documents by Christoph Neuherz.
