The city of Salzburg is part of the Buddy Group ‘Streets of the Future – Axes of Active Mobility’, with the focus area of the so-called ‘Nordspange’ in the Schallmoos district. The group also includes the pilot city of St. Pölten and the ‘Buddies’ Wiener Neustadt and Mödling. In this context, Smart City Salzburg organised an on-site workshop focusing on cycling, in collaboration with TU Wien and iSPACE.

The event started with expert input from the City of Salzburg, iSPACE and con.sens Verkehrsplanung. Attendees then discussed the planning status and challenges in the Schallmoos pilot area. The St. Pölten pilot and the buddy municipalities of Wiener Neustadt and Mödling then presented their current projects, establishing initial points of contact for further dialogue.

In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to experience Salzburg's cycling infrastructure first-hand: During a two-hour cycling tour in beautiful spring weather, we travelled from the main railway station to the Schallmoos pilot area and back, passing other cycling projects along the way. At the end of the tour, we discussed the strengths and challenges of the Salzburg projects at length, identifying similarities and differences, and exchanging a number of strategic and tactical mobility approaches. A successful start for the buddy group!
