On April 24, 2025, the Open Day for the study programs Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering – Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, and Technical Chemistry took place at the TU Wien Campus Getreidemarkt. Numerous interested high school students took the opportunity to learn about study options and gain insights into current research activities.

Attention was drawn to the station presented by PhD candidate Seyedmohsen Baghaei Oskouei, who conducted a live demonstration of mechanical lung ventilation using a pig lung. The presentation was part of the HiELuVent research project, which focuses on the optimization and analysis of innovative ventilation methods.

Using the lung ventilator available in our lab, he impressively demonstrated the effects of various ventilation modes on lung volume. The following techniques were presented:

  • Conventional ventilation
  • High-frequency jet ventilation
  • Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation

The opportunity to observe the mechanical function of the lung and the differences between ventilation methods in real time sparked great interest and led to many engaging discussions with visitors.

In addition to this presentation, many other stations offered a diverse program – from experiments in process engineering to robotics and materials research. Overall, it was a successful and vibrant event that inspired enthusiasm for science and technology.

We would like to thank all participants and visitors for their interest and look forward to future events!
