NII Internship

2nd Call of 2025

The NII International Internship Program is an exchange activity with students from institutions with which NII has concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement. This incentive program aims at giving interns the opportunity for professional and personal development by engaging in research activities under the guidance and supervision of NII researchers.

Target candidates

Master and/or Ph. D. students who are enrolled at TU Wien.

Application procedure

Fill out the NII International Internship Program Application Form and submit it to JASEC (jasec@tuwien.ac.at, opens an external URL in a new window) AND in CC to Prof. Thomas Eiter (thomas.eiter@tuwien.ac.at), opens an external URL in a new window with your CV attached.

Choose up to three topics out of the list of topics from NII's website, öffnet eine externe URL in einem neuen Fenster, opens an external URL in a new window and establish contact with NII supervisors who match the desired research topic. For a successful application you will need a letter of acceptance from the supervising professor (this can also be the e-mail correspondence etc.)

A nomination by JASEC at TU Wien is necessary as no direct application from candidates is accepted.

Internal Deadline for submitting your application to JASEC is October 15, 2025.

Attention:

  • Do not send applications directly to NII as your documents will be checked internally before a nomination is sent to the NII.
  • For a successful application, applicants need to receive an informal letter of consent (an informal E-Mail is sufficient) which states that a potential supervisor agrees to welcome the applicant in his/her lab.
  • For this call, we encourage students to start their stay after March 15th, 2026. The duration of the internship should be also discussed with NII supervisors. The internship activities should be for a period of 60 to 165 days excluding traveling days. A minimum of 2 months stay is compulsory.
  • Available research topics and application forms can be downloaded from the NII's website.
  • VERY IMPORTANT: If accepted, candidates are expected to maintain their enrollment status at their home institutions for the full duration of their Internships.

Notification

Notification of successful candidates will be made after the end of November, 2025.
NII will notify the contact person of each partner institution.

Important: acceptance as an NII Internship student is subject to the condition that the student works on the approved project topic, and complies with NII and Japanese government regulations. In the event that these conditions are not respected, NII may take appropriate action that may include the termination of their internship.

Sojourn expenses

5,700 JPY per day as sojourn expenses will be covered by NII while intern students are staying at NII.
Transportation expenses are in principle not paid.
