Invitation to Collaborate: Case-Control Studies on Injury Risks and Interventions in LMICs

Dear colleagues,

We are writing to invite expressions of interest from researchers based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) who are interested in leading a case-control study on injury-related risk factors or interventions. Over the coming year, we will host a series of virtual and in-person training sessions in New Delhi (India), Bogotá (Colombia), and Cape Town (South Africa) to support the design and implementation of these studies. Participants will receive ongoing mentorship and will present their work at the World Safety conference in Cape Town from 2-4 September 2026. We have funding to support travel for up to three participants to attend each training workshop and to travel to Cape Town for Safety 2026. Conference registration fees are not included, but waivers are being discussed with conference organizers.

Case-control studies offer a practical, rigorous, and cost-effective approach for evaluating injury interventions in LMIC settings. This commentary, opens an external URL in a new window (under review in BMJ Injury Prevention) outlines the rationale and urgency for strengthening this type of evidence.

We welcome interest from graduate students and early-career researchers with a quantitative background, and:

  • A clear injury-related research question (any cause: e.g., road traffic injury, burns, falls, violence)
  • Access to individual-level data on injury cases (e.g., from police, hospital, or cohort sources)
  • Capacity to collect exposure data on controls (e.g., through surveys or environmental audits)
  • Commitment to completing analysis by September 2026 for presentation at Safety 2026

If you are interested in joining this collaboration, please do the following:

We look forward to hearing from you.
