On May 27th, 2025, TU Wien hosted a hackathon focused on finalising the Common maDMP API, a key step toward making Data Management Plans (DMPs) truly machine-actionable. Organised by Tomasz Miksa, with support from Suvini Lai, the event brought together members of the RDA Working Group Common Application Programming Interface (API) for machine-actionable Data Management Plans (maDMPs), opens an external URL in a new windowfor an intensive face-to-face session. Building on the outcomes of the previous hackathon in Athens, this meeting aimed to close design discussions and kick off implementation across platforms.

The results and our input

The hackathon concluded with finalising the API’s preliminary design, establishing a stable foundation for CRUD operations, error handling, and authentication strategies. Notably, developers from the DAMAP team at TU Wien’s Center for Research Data Management — Valentin Futterer, Rafael Santos, and Andres Tabima — played a key role in shaping the technical outcomes and contributing to the collaborative spirit of the event.

This API is a cornerstone for the OSTrails project, opens an external URL in a new window, which aims to enhance FAIRness and interoperability within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). By enabling seamless integration of DMPs into research workflows, the API supports more efficient planning, tracking, and assessment of research data. The Vienna hackathon demonstrated the strength of community-driven development in advancing Open Science infrastructure and fostering cross-institutional collaboration.

Contributing to a fuTUre fit TU Wien

The outcomes of this hackathon also represent a tangible contribution to TU Wien’s digital transformation strategy. By enabling the reuse of structured DMP information across services, the API supports more integrated and automated research workflows — an essential step toward a smarter, data-driven university. This aligns directly with TU Wien’s strategic goals outlined in fuTUre fit – Die Strategie der TU Wien, opens in new window, particularly the priorities to establish digital transformation as a strategic pillar and to position TU Wien as a leading institution for the exchange of knowledge, methods, and technologies.
