Book release: Wirbelfeld - Contributions to contemporary art and culture in rural areas

In 2022, the Wirbelfeld project invited four young artists to spend four months in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria. This led to the publication Wirbelfeld. It brings together contributions, essays, project insights and much more on topics relating to contemporary art and culture in rural areas.

From April to the end of July 2022, four artists - Lina Alice Klosterkötter, Maidje Meergans, Flora Valentina Besenbäck and Jaskaran Anand - lived and worked in three project communities in the Innviertel region - Aspach, Siegharting and Sankt Marienkirchen. By introducing and opening up their own artistic practice and exchanging ideas with interested residents, cultural associations, local artists and craftspeople, they stirred up the cultural landscape of the Innviertel region during this time.

On the initiative of Magdalena Hubauer and Katharina Spanlang, the publication “Wirbelfeld - Beiträge zu zeitgenössischer Kunst und Kultur im ländlichen Raum” (2024) was created. Our senior scientist Petra Hirschler wrote an essay for the book entitled “Chances instead of hurdles: Cultural diversity and equality in rural areas”. She combines a regional planning perspective on art and culture in rural areas with a feminist-analytical lens.
