In many ways, science and technology have the potential to shape and change the world. This course introduces doctoral researchers to different perspectives on the possible societal implications of their research, including research ethics, integrity, and responsibility to society.
Researchers are increasingly encouraged to consider the societal benefits and concerns related to their fields of study, including perspectives from Research Ethics, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), and Open Science. In this workshop, doctoral candidates will learn to identify and reflect on relevant societal issues and concerns related to their fields of study. Furthermore, they will develop ideas for acting upon these reflections when carrying out their doctoral projects.
The workshop includes interdisciplinary debates with colleagues, compilation of a reflection dossier, and incubation of ideas on how to act ethically and responsibly in concrete research practices. These reflective skills and practices are valued in many contemporary labor markets, such as research, science communication, research public relations, consulting, and more. They also support more nuanced communication of scientific research to different audiences and interaction with relevant stakeholders.

In this workshop, doctoral candidates will learn how to find and manage academic information resources relevant to their doctoral projects at TU Wien and beyond. The focus will be on finding scholarly information resources, understanding the information, and utilizing existing tools (e.g., SCOPUS, Web of Science, etc.) and resources for literature research.
Attendees will learn to search for and manage academic information relevant to their research topic more effectively and proficiently. Additionally, they will learn search and information management strategies to enhance their research competencies.

This workshop introduces doctoral researchers to practical frameworks and tools that support effective decision-making, productivity, and personal development in complex environments. The focus is on transferable skills that are useful not only during the doctoral journey but also throughout one’s professional and personal life.
Participants will become familiar with widely used strategic and productivity tools, including:

• SMART goal setting
• SWOT analysis
• Eisenhower Matrix for prioritization
• Pomodoro technique and structured work systems
• Approaches for reducing procrastination and improving focus

These methods are commonly applied in research, industry, entrepreneurship, and leadership contexts. Therefore, the workshop aims to help participants develop structured thinking and self-management skills that will remain valuable well beyond the doctoral phase.
Participants will learn to apply these frameworks to organize complex tasks, prioritize competing responsibilities, and make more deliberate decisions in professional and personal contexts. The workshop also offers a confidential, supportive space to reflect on common challenges in demanding work environments, such as time pressure, competing obligations, and maintaining well-being.

! Please note: The workshop focuses on general frameworks and transferable skills. It does NOT provide individual advice or coaching on participants’ specific research projects or theses.
Transferable skills can be applied across different roles, fields, or life situations rather than being specific to a single job, discipline, or task.

When you’re speaking in front of people, do you capture and hold their attention? Do you instill confidence by what you say and how you say it? In an environment where it is becoming ever more important to convey trustworthiness, competence, and authenticity, presence training has become an essential tool in professional development.
This two-day workshop is designed to help academic professionals align their body language with their purpose and intentions in the present moment in order to create an effective and powerful presence. It is designed to reach the target aims through meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater exercises, and other exercises informed by Amy Cuddy’s work on presence.

In order to apply the principles taught in a pragmatic way, all participants are required to have a 2-3 minute self-presentation prepared and ready to use.

This two-day workshop is designed to enhance your writing skills and boost your confidence when writing for scientific journals. The focus will be on creating your manuscript outline, structuring your paper, and determining which information belongs in each section. You will learn how to communicate your research results in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, we will discuss writing style and manuscript preparation for submission. Finally, you will be introduced to the concepts of research data management as well as scientific conduct and research integrity.

To apply the principles taught in a practical way, all participants are required to prepare an abstract and introduction for a (fictitious) paper after the first day of the workshop. These assignments will then be discussed on the second day of the workshop.

You have heard of GitHub or GitLab, but you are not sure whether such Git-based systems are suitable for you.

Version Control Systems facilitate effective collaboration between people. Although these tools are mostly used in the field of Software Engineering, they are not limited to this use case. Version Control Systems like Git can be used for collaboration on text documents (training material, documentation, etc.) and keeping track of any changes.

This workshop aims to guide participants through the setup of Git and explain the basic terms and concepts. It will enable participants to create a Git repository and contribute to an existing one.

You will learn how to…

• configure an SSH-Key for your GitLab Account
• create new Git repositories
• commit changes to a Git repository
• explore the history of your Git repository
• synchronise a local repository with a remote repository by using the push and pull commands.

Note: To learn more about Git, we recommend the course Mastering Git, in the afternoon.

Are you new to version control or eager to enhance your development workflow?

This course provides a hands-on introduction to how Git can simplify routine file operations. Whether one has used Git before or not, this course is for all developers, data scientists, researchers, and students who write or modify code or documents.

We focus on the basics: how to use Git locally to record snapshots of your work, see previous versions, recover lost changes and understand the history of what was happening in your project. Time is spent getting comfortable with the basic set of commands you use every day; branches and GitHub are mentioned briefly to show folks where these concepts fit in. The workshop is hands-on: simple tasks follow a brief explanation, allowing participants to try things out right away and learn by doing.

Deadlines do not wait, and sometimes a Data Management Plan lands on your desk right when you are juggling a dozen other tasks. This workshop is designed to help you handle that situation efficiently and without stress.

The core of this session is a guided, practical walkthrough of the TU Wien DMP Tool. There are no long presentations and no long theory blocks. Instead, we go straight into the tool and show you how to use it step by step. You will see how to create a clear, funder-compliant DMP for FWF, FFG, Horizon Europe, and other major funders, and you will get an overview of what information you need and how the tool helps you structure it.

This workshop focuses on using the tool effectively rather than exploring research data management in depth.

Learn about research data management to fulfil funders' requirements and to benefit in your daily work.

In their request for open science and FAIR principles, funding bodies increasingly require well-defined data management and a Data Management Plan (DMP). A DMP helps researchers consider all relevant questions concerning data handling along the research lifecycle. This includes storage and archiving infrastructures, publication of data, as well as citation, use of persistent identifiers, long-term access, and potential deletion.

Participants of this workshop will learn about the tools and support available with respect to research data management at TU Wien and beyond. The workshop covers the expectations of funders as well as the benefits for individual researchers from improved data management, useful tips for creating DMPs, and a demonstration of the TU Wien DMP Tool.
