Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are disrupting many different activities, including research, and will continue to do so. While these tools are powerful and useful for some tasks, they present challenges and limitations that users need to be aware of.

On March 20th the European Commission, along with the countries and stakeholders represented in the ERA Forum, has launched "Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research". TU Wien endorses the guidelines and encourages their adoption. Marjo Rauhala (Head Responsible Research Practices) contributed as a representative of TU Wien and the CESAER, opens an external URL in a new window network to the development process.

The guidelines are a set of recommendations that could provide simple and actionable guidance to the European research community to foster the adoption of the technology in a responsible manner. Furthermore they are a consolidation of different ideas and should be seen as support for scientists who use and work with generative AI in science.

These guidelines will be updated regularly to keep pace with the very fast technological development in this area. The research community is encouraged to contribute their views and ideas on how to enhance future versions through the feedback form, opens an external URL in a new window.
