There is a broadly shared commitment to making lakes and other natural areas more accessible to the general public. In many places in Austria, this has already been achieved. However, long stretches of lakeside are occupied by private houses, hotels and infrastructural facilities, while no-trespassing signs line the shores. The Austrian situation has not yet been systematically explored. What is the actual state of affairs around lakes?
