On 22 June 2018, Dipl.-Ing. Jacqueline Plachy BSc won the FCP Innovation Award 2017 for her diploma thesis entitled "Numerical investigation of the effects of the BOKU Türkenwirt construction project on the "Große Türkenschanztunnel"". This prestigious prize is awarded once a year by the FCP engineering office throughout Austria for a diploma thesis and a dissertation in the field of civil engineering. In her thesis, Ms Plachy carried out complex numerical 3D calculations using modern, high-quality material laws to model the subsurface and the tunnel for the initial state, the various construction phases with deep excavation and the final state, and compared the results of the calculations with the permanent deformation measurements in the tunnel, which lasted over a year. This showed excellent agreement between the calculation and measurement results. It is particularly noteworthy that the material parameters already defined for a 2D calculation before the construction measure remained unchanged and no adjustment was necessary.
