Excursion to the Wientalterrassen in Penzing

The ‘Wientalterrassen’ residential complex in Penzing, due for completion in 2022, is an outstanding WBV-GPA project that promotes social diversity and integrates sustainable energy solutions. During a recent excursion, our alumni and students from the real-estate courses at TU Wien were given a comprehensive insight into the innovative concept.

Innovative energy concepts: One of the key requirements was to do without fossil fuels. Franz Pranckl, MSc from GPA Planungsgesellschaft integrated geothermal energy and building component activation to achieve this. The project was developed under the research-led expertise of engineer Walter Laschober (HTB-Plan). Over 60 deep probes, each 142 metres long, were inserted into the ground, enabling an efficient energy supply for the 295 flats. The entire residential complex was realised with a budget of around 60 million euros. After completion, a three-year monitoring phase began, led by Dr Simon Handler, in order to precisely calibrate the technical systems. Residents benefit from pleasant cooling in summer and significantly lower energy costs.

Social housing: Together with the architectural firms Christoph Lechner & Partner ZT GmbH and Berger + Parkkinen Architekten, WBV-GPA has created a complex that lives inclusion and promotes mutual support. The Wientalterrassen comprise 196 subsidised rental flats and ten Housing First flats, which offer quick and unbureaucratic assistance.

Generation centre ‘All in Penzing’: The heart of the complex is the generation centre ‘All in Penzing’, a meeting place for all generations with a wide range of activities on 500 m². From gymnastics and memory training to arts and crafts and children's programmes - there is something for everyone here. The 700 m² communal roof terrace with raised beds and a view of the Wiental valley offers additional space for communal activities.

Sustainability and awards: The Wientalterrassen are a prime example of ecological building and were awarded the ÖGUT Environmental Award 2023 in the ‘Climate Neutral City’ category. The project impressively demonstrates how modern, social housing can be realised in Vienna.

This excursion illustrated how the use of state-of-the-art technology and sustainable energy solutions can create forward-looking living space. The participants gained valuable insights into the innovative and social concepts of the Wientalterrassen.
