In 2018, the European Commission launched the European Universities , opens an external URL in a new windowInitiative to comprehensively and sustainably modernize European higher education. The goals of the initiative are:

Support and strengthen the European idea
Further developing the performance and competitiveness of the European higher education system by significantly increasing, or improving, the quality, performance and attractiveness of European universities
bringing together a new generation of Europeans, promoting common values and a European identity.
