APCC Special Report release: Land use and climate change in Austria

Another APCC Special Report has just been published: Land Use and Climate Change in Austria. Several authors from our Institute of Spatial Planning contributed to the various chapters, including Hartmut Dumke from the Research Unit Regional Planning and Regional Development in Chapter 7 ‘Spatial Planning and Climate Change’. This chapter finally fulfils an important requirement of the earlier Climate Change Assessment Report from 2014 - namely that there is a dedicated spatial planning chapter at all.

Knowledge-based and socially accepted political decisions are required in order to utilise and expand the existing synergies between different forms of land use, while at the same time minimising conflicting objectives and undesirable effects. The APCC Special Report: Land Use and Climate Change in Austria was written in awareness of the interlinkages between the climate and biodiversity crises and geopolitical changes. It summarises and evaluates current knowledge on land use and climate change and their interdependencies. It presents and evaluates the options for action to adapt to and mitigate climate change, taking into account production, social demands, legal frameworks and consumer behaviour.
The open access report is divided into eight thematic chapters and a synopsis. A technical summary contains the key messages of the chapters, and the summary for policy makers summarises the statements of the report in a concise form. 130 authors from many scientific disciplines have had their say in the APCC Special Report. The report was commented on by more than 50 people and stakeholders in an open and transparent review process.
