An important step in this direction was the network meeting with delegations from four leading Korean technical universities, which took place at TU Wien from 25 to 28 August as part of the Europe Korea Conference on Science and Technology (EKC).
High-ranking representatives from POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology), DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology) and UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) were guests at the meeting. Together with numerous faculty members from TU Wien, research profiles, mission statements and future prospects were discussed at the network meeting. The aim is to establish long-term cooperation and deepen existing contacts.
South Korea's recent accession to the Horizon Europe research funding programme provides a strategic advantage, opening up new opportunities for joint projects. While POSTECH has been a partner university of TU Wien since 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed with UNIST during the visit, forming the basis for future cooperation.
“The Internationalisation of TU Wien means not only visibility in Europe, but also the expansion of strategic partnerships in dynamic research regions worldwide – and South Korea plays a key role here,” says Iris Mach, Head of the Strategic Cooperation Centers in the Department of International Relations and Global Affairs.
The university is thus sending a clear signal: scientific networks are to be expanded even more specifically in the future in order to open up new opportunities for international cooperation for both students and researchers.
