We are pleased to welcome PD Dr. Alexander Follmann as a visiting professor at the Research Unit for Urban and Regional Research (SRF). This semester, Alexander Follmann will teach the course, opens an external URL in a new window “Peri-urban transformations: bridging debates from different metropolitan regions in the Global South and North”. The course introduces theories of urban and regional transformation with a focus on the particularities of the peri-urban context. Case studies from metropolitan regions in the Global South and Global North will be used to illustrate the different challenges and opportunities of peripheral urbanisation.

Alexander Follmann's research focuses on urban and economic geography, human-environment relations, political ecology and sustainability. He has a particular focus on peri-urban change, the development of smart cities, agricultural transformation processes and participation in urban development projects.
