In the bachelor's seminar ‘daSEINsvorsorge’ (provision for the future), students researched urgent issues affecting rural areas, with a focus on the Waldviertel region, under the supervision of land.mobil:LAB, among others.

The 15 spatial planning students addressed topics such as…

  • healthcare
  • home office
  • wind power potential
  • local supply
  • third places
  • rail transport
  • rural exodus from a gender perspective
  • equal participation
  • food security
  • (alternative) forms of living
  • the integration of the Krems urban region with a focus on Krems city centre
  • health with a focus on Krems University Hospital
  • the redesign of public spaces with a focus on Körnermarkt and Dominikanerplatz
  • the banks of the Danube around Steiner Donaulände and Franz-Zeller-Platz
  • as well as Steiner Donaulände, Rathausplatz and Schürerplatz

in rural areas!

Project manager Céline Schmidt-Hamburger had the opportunity to supervise three of the bachelor's theses that were produced.

As part of the Master's project, ‘Design: Transforming Spaces – Transformation of Urban Parking Areas', architecture and spatial planning students explored the Krems region in the Waldviertel, together with lecturers, as well as Elias Grinzinger and Céline Schmidt-Hamburger from land.mobil:LAB.

A central question of the project was how to repurpose the many sealed surfaces that had previously only been used for parking vehicles. To provide inspiration, an excursion was organised to Paris in April – the city's PV systems, greening, unsealing and conversion projects demonstrate how car parking spaces can be transformed.

On 18 June 2025, the students presented their proposals for transforming the Krems region. The five transformation strategies addressed were:

  • the integration of the Krems urban region, focusing on Krems city centre
  • health, focusing on Krems University Hospital
  • the redesign of public spaces with a focus on the Körnermarkt and Dominikanerplatz areas
  • the banks of the Danube around Steiner Donaulände and Franz-Zeller-Platz
  • as well as Steiner Donaulände, Rathausplatz and Schürerplatz

The results of these two inspiring, cross-border, research-led and interdisciplinary courses offered today are part of tomorrow's mobility revolution!
