This workshop is tailored to students from selected Japanese Partner Universities, but we invite also local TU Wien students to join this course from September 8 until September 16, 2025. During the workshop, we will discuss and analyze the development and influences of the cultural upheavals during the time of Red Vienna.
Workshop Structure and Key Facts
The student workshop on „Red Vienna“ in Vienna provides an in-depth exploration of the historical and contemporary impact of the “Rotes Wien” movement. Through a combination of lectures and site visits, participants will gain insights into the political, social, and architectural transformations that shaped Vienna in the early 20th century. The workshop includes visits to key locations such as municipal housing projects (Gemeindebauten), cultural institutions, and public spaces that reflect the movement’s legacy.
During the workshop, we will discuss and analyse the development and influences of the cultural upheavals during the time of Red Vienna. Students will be working in mixed groups of TU-Wien Students and Students of our japanese Partner institutions. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a comprehensive perspective on how Red Vienna continues to shape the city’s identity and urban fabric today.
