Annamaria Massimini completed her Master's degree in Mathematics at the University of Pavia (Italy) in 2021 with distinction. From 2021 to 2024, she worked as a project assistant in the group of Prof. Ansgar Jüngel and completed her dissertation on the topic of “Derivation, analysis and numerics for diffusive multicomponent systems” in September 2024, again with distinction. In her dissertation, which was written as part of a cotutelle agreement with Prof. Francesco Salvarani from the Hautes Écoles Sorbonne Arts et Métiers Université in Paris, Dr. Massimini investigated systems consisting of different components, such as the transport of charged ions in ion channels of synapses and the transport of aerosol mixtures with variable temperature. What is remarkable about her doctoral thesis is the skillful combination of mathematical modeling using diffusion equations and kinetic models, the analysis of the nonlinear partial differential equations, and their numerical approximation using finite volumes. Dr. Massimini has substantially expanded the understanding of diffusion systems with the help of entropy methods. The dissertation was reviewed by the renowned professors Jian-Guo Liu (Duke University) and Benoit Perthame (Sorbonne Université Paris). Dr. Massimini will be working as a postdoc in Prof. Virginie Ehrlacher's group at the Ecole des Ponts in Paris from November 2024 and will continue her promising research work. We wish her every success in her research!
