New insights into wastewater surveillance from a 1-year survey of the untreated influent at the Bucharest WWTP and an infectious diseases hospital:

• SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in wastewater preceded the increase in the number of clinical cases by nearly two weeks.
• Comparing the two sites indicates that monitoring wastewater at an urban level provides a more complete and epidemiologically relevant picture than data obtained only from hospitals.
• Adenovirus, bocavirus and reovirus were the most abundant in both urban and hospital wastewater.
