Metal 3D Printing in Orbit. A European Achievement and Building Block towards Manufacturing in Space

More than 150 guests joined the TU Wien – Academy for Continuing Education for a captivating Public Lecture by ESA Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Dr. Advenit Makaya. He presented a milestone achievement in space engineering: the world’s first successful demonstration of additive manufacturing of metallic parts in Earth orbit, carried out by a European team.

In his talk, Advenit Makaya walked the audience through the mission’s objectives, the international team behind it, the technical setup, the development timeline, and the key challenges of 3D printing in microgravity. He explained which materials can be used in orbit—and why titanium is off the table, as its processing would require argon as a shielding gas, posing a serious risk to astronauts.

As coordinator of ESA’s Out-of-Earth Manufacturing initiative, Dr. Makaya also discussed how in-space manufacturing technologies can support future sustainable space activities. The lecture offered a fascinating look into the future of space architecture and engineering, highlighting both the complexity and the promise of building beyond our planet.
