Two "Mo.Hubs" were dismantled - these are the findings so far!

The first pilot phase of the Mo.Hub research and pilot project has been completed. What do we take away for the future?

About the Mo.Hub research project

The name says it all: Mobility Hubs (mobility stations) are already an integral part of the mobility services in Vienna. The Mo.Hub research project is investigating which concepts make it easy for neighbours to share bicycles and cars and which features are particularly important (or even secondary) for the various users.

For example, mobility stations with e-car, e-load bike and a Grätzloase were set up in Salzergasse on Alsergrund and in Schottenfeldgasse on Neubau as part of the project. The vehicles could be borrowed for a certain fee. Everyone was invited to use the offer - regardless of previous knowledge and own experience with mobility stations. The research project aims to test the implementation of cooperative mobility stations in existing neighbourhoods.

Now the two stations have been dismantled - however, at least part of the construct, the Grätzloase, remains in the 9th district!

By using shared vehicles, public space is freed up for other uses, as not every person needs their own car and thus a parking space. The free space created can thereby be dedicated to other activities - Grätzloasen reflect this idea of space design.

The findings so far

Following the first pilot phase, the first results are emerging: 

  • There is definitely interest in the mobility stations.
  • The integration of existing infrastructures (such as the directly adjacent WienMobil bike station at Neubau) into the Mo.Hubs has proven to be particularly useful. In addition to the integration of existing mobility services, the cooperation with local businesses and initiatives (for example the Lichtental agenda group and its premises in Salzergasse) is also important to successfully implement a Mo.Hub location. 
  • The planning / implementation process (keyword bureaucracy) has unfortunately proven to be very complex. Only thanks to the support of Wiener Linien and the district authorities could the realisation be successfully completed.

Prospects

Following the test phase of the temporary Mo.Hubs, the local population is called upon - the research team has created a 5 to 10 minute survey, opens an external URL in a new window for the residents and workers of the 7th and 9th districts, in which they can express their experiences, ideas, wishes and suggestions for improvement. The survey is not only about the users of the Mo.Hubs, but also about people in the districts who have not used the offer.
