In episode 27, Lena Hohenkamp (Local Planning, TU Wien) talks to Emanuela Semlitsch and Kerstin Pluch (Local Planning, TU Wien) and Johannes Suitner (Urban and Regional Research, TU Wien) about what design in spatial planning actually means today - and the different perspectives we can take on it.

Kerstin Pluch studied architecture at TU Wien and ETSAM in Madrid. She has worked for the MA18, the Inter-American Development Bank and architecture firms in Vienna and Madrid, among others, and has been teaching at TU Wien since 2017. As part of her dissertation, she is researching housing as a planning tool - with a focus on social and spatial justice and the role of location as a common good.
Emanuela Semlitsch has been teaching and researching at the Research Unit of Local Planning since 2018. Her dissertation "Leaving room for manoeuvre. Performative Interventions in the Context of the City" (2012) emerged from her theatre work in public space. Her research focuses on urban educational spaces, performative strategies in planning and research as well as design- and practice-based research. She is a member of the research team ‘Arbeitsraum Bildung’ at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning.
Johannes Suitner is Assistant Professor for Urban and Regional Transformation at the Department of Urban and Regional Research. He conducts research on cultures and policies of local sustainability transformations, resilient cities, imaginaries of eco-social futures and the transformation of planning.
Lena Hohenkamp studied business administration at the University of Regensburg and spatial planning at the TU Wien and ENSA Strasbourg. She gained practical experience in local planning in Le Vésinet, France, Hamburg and at the City of Vienna, MA 21B. As part of her dissertation, she is researching and teaching Tactical Urbanism and Placemaking.
