Conference “Organizing social services in a non-profit and democratic way”

Transnational, profit-oriented corporations are forcing their way into critical social infrastructure and services of general interest. In Austria, this affects inpatient long-term care in particular. Business practices include staff cutbacks, debt-financed takeovers and excessive intra-group rent and interest payments. Some of the scarce public funds invested in care end up as unearned income for “shareholders”. What strategies are needed to break this dynamic? What can be done to solve the care crisis in general and in the areas of health and care in particular? What contribution can the social economy make? Based on an analysis of the problem, this conference will discuss and develop solutions together.

The conference was organized by the Research Unit for Public Finance and Infrastructure Policy (IFIP) - Vienna University of Technology, in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Labour, the RCE Graz-Styria (Centre for Sustainable Societal Transformation at the University of Graz) and the Competence Centre for Everyday Economics.
