Climate change hits unequally: Why social justice is the key to successful adaptation

Climate change is not just an ecological and technical challenge - it is also a question of social justice, according to a recent study led by BOKU. Antonia Schneider and Michael Getzner from the Department of Finance and Infrastructure Policy (IFIP) played a key role in this study.

The current study by BOKU University, Geosphere Austria, TU Vienna, the Austrian Institute of Technology and Joanneum Research shows: Vulnerable groups such as low-income households and older people are particularly affected by the consequences of urban heat or extreme weather. Even well-intentioned measures such as the greening of city districts can unintentionally lead to the displacement of those who should actually be protected - if social aspects are not considered from the outset.
