"Brückenbauspaziergang" – seeing what we have learned

Despite an air temperature of only 5°C, this year’s walk as part of the course “Concrete Bridges” took us along the Donaukanal. The walk offered a fascinating historical insight into the development of concrete bridge construction. We explored bridges from the early days of prestressed concrete (Schwedenbrücke – MA29) to those pushing the limits of reinforced concrete design in the past (Marienbrücke and Heiligenstädterbrücke – MA29), as well as special structures such as the U6 Donaukanalbrücke (Wiener Linien, MA29). Along the way, we discussed topics such as construction methods, structural systems, bridge equipment, maintenance, and much more. The future of our infrastructure depends on the next generation of bridge builders.
