As part of the 2025–2027/28 performance agreement with the Rector’s Office, additional funds are being made available to support the participation of early-career female researchers from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering in workshops, conferences, and other academic events.

These funds are intended to encourage and support young female researchers in the development of their professional careers and the further development of their technical and social skills.

Stefani Rivic, Assistant at the Institute of Water Quality and Resource Management, gained a travel grant from fem.cee – women network at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In March she had the opportunity to visit the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union and collaborate with the Environment and Resources Unit on future-oriented research topics in circular economy and resource management.

Building on her work at TU Wien on integrating material flow analysis and economic modelling for circular plastics, the stay opened up exciting new perspectives for collaborative research on circularity, resource efficiency, and critical raw materials together with inspiring researchers from across Europe.

The visit was filled with productive discussions, new ideas, and valuable exchanges across disciplines, which is also intended to serve as the foundation for future publications. We can look forward to seeing how this develops.

Stefani Rivic’s research focuses on the limitations of the circular economy as it applies to plastic packaging. She integrates a material flow analysis (MFA) of Austrian plastic packaging into a computable general equilibrium model to assess the impacts of various policy measures from both physical and economic perspectives.

Based on this work, she was invited by the JRC to collaborate on the development of similar modeling approaches for two topics: (1) aluminum recycling in the construction sector and (2) the production of secondary phosphate fertilizer from sewage sludge. The topic of aluminum was of particular relevance due to ongoing European Commission initiatives related to critical raw materials and strategies to secure the aluminum supply.

The topic of the circular economy is highly relevant in the construction industry and is addressed and promoted in the development plan of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the research focus area of Sustainable Building Materials, Resource Management (Reuse), and Simulation.
