Forschungsrichtungen

Die Rupprechter Group verfolgt die Strategie, katalytische Oberflächenreaktionen an heterogenen Katalysatoren mit Hilfe eines vierfachen Ansatzes zu untersuchen, der Folgendes umfasst

1. Model Catalysis and Surface Science

2. Atomically-precise Cluster Catalysis

3. Applied Catalysis

4. Microkinetic Modeling and Simulation

Der Schwerpunkt der ersten drei Bereiche liegt auf der Untersuchung aktiver, funktionierender Katalysatoren unter Betriebsbedingungen mittels Oberflächenspektroskopie (PM-IRAS, FTIR, ATR, DRIFTS, SFG, NAP-XPS, XANES, EXAFS) und Oberflächenmikroskopie (PEEM, FEM, FIM, SPEM), vorzugsweise bei realistischen Temperaturen und (nahezu) atmosphärischem Druck, mit gleichzeitiger GC- oder MS-Analyse der katalytischen Leistung. In zahlreichen Fällen ist die Interpretation und Verifizierung der experimentellen Spektren/Bilder/Muster auf theoretische Unterstützung angewiesen, z. B. durch die Berechnung von Strukturen, Adsorptions- und Aktivierungsenergien für Einkristalloberflächen, Nanopartikel und Cluster, ergänzt durch mikrokinetische Reaktionsmodellierung.

Dieser vierfache Ansatz ermöglicht einen "ganzheitlicheren" Blick auf die katalytisch relevante atomare und elektronische Oberflächenstruktur von Katalysatoren sowie auf die molekularen Details, die die Reaktionsaktivität und - noch wichtiger - die Reaktionsselektivität steuern. Durch den Vergleich von Einkristallen mit Modellkatalysatoren in Form von Nanopartikeln oder Clustern wird die Materiallücke aufgeklärt, und durch den Vergleich von UHV- und Umgebungsdruckstudien wird die Drucklücke deutlich. Insbesondere Synergien zwischen Studien an Modellkatalysatoren und technologischen Katalysatoren bieten oft Zugang zu atomistischen Details. Neuartige Ansätze zur Darstellung von Oberflächenreaktionen (Kinetik durch Bildgebung) an Modellkatalysatoren (Oberflächenstruktur und Partikelgrößenbibliotheken) mittels PEEM/FEM/FIM/SPEM haben sich als besonders leistungsfähig erwiesen. Viele der Studien werden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Theorie durchgeführt.
