Bernice Maxton-Lee brings global sustainability expertise to ETIA

Dr. Bernice Maxton-Lee from the University of Edinburgh Business School explores why turning sustainability into practice is harder than it seems, and how businesses and policymakers can navigate the challenges of real transition.

Dr. Bernice Maxton-Lee

Dr. Bernice Maxton-Lee, lecturer at the University of Edinburgh Business School and alumna of the Environmental Technology and International Affairs (ETIA) programme, has joined the ETIA faculty again as a lecturer. As an authority on global sustainability transitions, she holds a PhD in Political Science and Sustainable Development from the City University of Hong Kong. Her publications include research on Southeast Asian environmental politics, eco-consumerism, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the book Forest Conservation and Sustainability in Indonesia (Routledge, 2020).

We are happy to welcome Dr. Maxton-Lee back to our programme for the ETIA 18 cohort, starting on September 29. In her guest lecture she will focus on sustainability and the global economy: “Sustainability is relatively simple in concept – so why aren’t we doing it?” Maxton-Lee asks. “In a system structured around resource exploitation and return on investment, the space for real sustainability is shrinking. My aim is to support decision-makers in aligning climate and sustainability goals with their organisations’ core mandates.”

By sharing her research and international experience, she will help equip the next generation of leaders to turn sustainability from concept into practice. We are looking forward to her lecture!
