Martin Handelshauser

About me

During my studies in the bachelor programme Bioengineering (B.Eng.) at the University of applied sciences in Munich, I developed a high interest in the movement of mammalian bodies. Because I became more interested in the muscular and extracellular causes for the distribution of mechanical signaling I visited a masters programme in Micro- and Nanotechnologies (M.Sc.) at the University of applied sciences in Munich. To deepen my expertise in aforementioned interests, I started writing my PhD-thesis at the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics (ILSB) as well as the Insitute of Chemical Technologies and Analytics (CTA) at the TU Wien under the supervision of Univ.Prof. Philipp J. Thurner (ILSB) and Univ.Prof. Martina Marchetti-Deschmann (CTA).

Research

In my research, I’m mostly interested in the relation between chemical composition of biological tissues and how these affect the mechanical behavior of said tissues. To deepen insight in this topic, I’m working towards the combination of state-of-the-art methods in chemical analysis like MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization – Time of Flight) imaging and mechanical measurement methods like AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy).
