Research Profile

Active at the interface of chemistry, chemical engineering, and physics.

Research deals mainly with understanding structure-activity relations of solid-state functional materials, in particular heterogeneous catalysis. Activities range across the entire catalysis life cycle of synthesis, characterisation, and testing, but with a focus on characterisation.

Specialist in applying synchrotron radiation (X-rays) as a complement to laboratory analysis methods. This includes imaging & tomography, spectroscopy, fluorescence, diffraction and scattering studies.

Measurement of catalysts and materials at work (in situ / operando) is also a key focus. Detailed characterisation in this context allows a better understanding of structure-activity relations, and may be used to inform synthesis strategies, or to optimise reaction processes.

Current perspective is to bridge the gap between model and technical scale systems, by means of spatially-resolved, non-destructive, and/or scale-bridging materials characterisation.
