Cyber Security: A Strategic Imperative or Just an IT Fix?

In today's digital world, cyber security is no longer a niche concern limited to IT departments—it has become a fundamental pillar shaping business resilience and societal stability. The proliferation of cyber threats, from ransomware attacks to data breaches, has demonstrated that cyber risks are not just technical challenges but strategic dilemmas that can cripple enterprises, erode consumer trust, and destabilize economies.

Given the increasing complexity and scale of cyber risks, an essential question arises: Is cyber security a strategic management topic, or is it something IT will fix anyway? While IT plays a crucial role in implementing security measures, cyber security extends far beyond technical safeguards—it requires leadership engagement, risk management, and alignment with overall business strategies.

In this expert talk, Stefan Jakoubi, Director Professional Services at SBA Research, will explore why cyber security should be elevated to a strategic priority and how organizations can integrate it into decision-making at the highest level. With his 19 years of experience in Cyber Security he has supported companies from various industries, is in close contact to decision makers and will share with us examples from everyday business life. The discussion will challenge traditional perceptions and propose actionable insights for leaders to adopt a holistic approach, where cyber security becomes a driving force for long-term sustainability rather than an afterthought.

SBA Research was founded in 2006 as the first Austrian research center for information security by the TU Wien, the Graz University of Technology and the University of Vienna. Through scientific research of information security we develop practical and applicable solutions, while focusing on current issues like cyber security and is now with more than 130 people the largest research center in Austria which exclusively addresses information security.
