The high demand for land in central Upper Austria poses major challenges for sustainable spatial development. How we use soil affects society as a whole. To promote responsible long-term decision-making, it is crucial to raise awareness of the value and diverse functions of our soils from an early age. Soils secure our food supply, store and filter water, contribute to climate protection, provide space for recreation, and form the basis for settlements and infrastructure.
The ‘BOkanns!’ project is developing a child-friendly information brochure containing simple experiment instructions to raise awareness of soil as a resource and the importance of protecting it. Aimed at children aged 4 to 10, the brochure supports educators and parents in communicating ecological concepts in an understandable way from an early age. The project aims to encourage children to develop an early understanding of, and interest in, environmental issues. This will enable them to act as multipliers within their families. In this way, ‘BOkanns!’ contributes significantly to the long-term promotion of soil protection and sustainable action.
The project is supported by funding from the Province of Upper Austria in the funding program: Awareness-raising measures and campaigns on soil as an environmental medium in Upper Austria.
