Research profile

Alexandros V. E. Ioannou-Naoum is a University Assistant and PhD Researcher at the Institute of Building and Industrial Construction at TU Wien.

His research investigates the conditions under which climate transformation of the existing building stock becomes feasible — or remains unrealised.

Rather than approaching retrofit as a purely technical optimisation problem, his work examines how regulatory frameworks, organisational structures, and multi-actor environments define the feasible decision space of climate intervention. By analysing how various constraints delimit technically robust strategies, he reframes building transformation as a coupled engineering–governance challenge.

His research combines typology-based retrofit analysis, lifecycle-oriented system evaluation, and structured modelling of transformation pathways to connect technical potential with real-world feasibility.

Focus

In civil and environmental engineering, Alexandros teaches BIM-based planning processes, lifecycle-oriented evaluation, and circular construction principles.

He also leads architectural design studios focused on adaptive reuse and climate-resilient transformation of existing building stock, emphasising renewable retrofit pathways and passive design integration.
