TU Wien warmly welcomes international guest researchers and visitors. IWEC supports international guests who come to TU Wien for research stays, dissertations, or thesis projects without an employment contract with the university.

Please contact us by e-mail to access our services and receive information on visas and residence permits, arriving in Austria and at TU Wien, as well as housing and living in Vienna.

Who is a Visiting Scholar or International Guest?

You are considered a visiting scholar or international guest if you are staying at TU Wien for a limited period of time - from one week up to 12 months - and are funded by your home institution, a scholarship or stipend, an external funding organization, or come to TU Wien as a Global Fellow or a Fullbright-TU Wien Visiting Professor.

Guest Registration

Anyone coming to TU Wien to conduct research, including as part of a thesis or dissertation, who does not have an employment contract with TU Wien and is not enrolled as a student at TU Wien should contact IWEC to register as an international guest.

Please note that you must have a host at TU Wien who has agreed to support your stay. Before registering, you should obtain your host's approval and agree on the details of your research visit.

Once the details of your stay have been finalized, please contact us at welcome.international@tuwien.ac.at to begin the registration process.

Visas and Residence Permits for Visiting Scholars and International Guests

Note: This information applies to visiting scholars and international guests.

The visa or residence permit you need in order to come to Austria as a guest researcher will vary based on your personal situation and background. In general, EU/EEA/Swiss nationals do not need a visa or residence permit to do research in Austria, but they are required to apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) within four months of their arrival in Vienna.

International guest researchers from non-EU/EEA countries should contact IWEC to receive advise on questions regarding visas and residence permits. In most cases researchers from non-EU/EEA countries can apply for a for a Visa C or D - gainful employment (for stays under 6 months) or a Settlement Permit - Special Cases of Gainful Employment (for stays longer than 6 months).

International guests seeking short-term accommodation are encouraged to contact us. We will be happy to provide information on available housing options or offer guidance in finding suitable accommodation.
