Registration in Vienna
Anybody who takes up residence in Austria (Austrians, EU/EEA nationals, nationals of third countries) has to register with the registration office at their place of residence.
This means you must register your place of residence, öffnet eine externe URL in einem neuen Fenster with the local authorities within three days of moving into your accommodation in Austria. After registration, you will receive a Meldebestätigung (registration certificate), which confirms your registered address in Austria. The registration form used for this process is called the Meldezettel, although this term is often used informally to refer to the registration certificate as well.
To register, you will need:
- your passport or another valid identity document;
- a completed Meldezettel form signed by your landlord or accommodation provider.
The Meldebestätigung is required for many administrative procedures in Austria. Every member of the household, including children, must be registered. When registering children, please bring their birth certificate.
You can register your address at any Registration Service Center (Meldeservice) of the municipal authority (Magistrat) in Vienna. If you have an IDAustria, öffnet eine externe URL in einem neuen Fenster, you can register your address online instead of visiting a Registration Service Center in person.
Note: If you are staying in tourist accommodation (e.g. a hotel or guesthouse) for up to two months, you do not need to register, as the accommodation provider is required to record your stay in a guest register (Gästeverzeichnis). However, if you are employed by TU Wien, the HR People and Services Department will require your Meldebestätigung before your employment contract can be finalized.
Additional Registration for EU, EEA, and Swiss Citizens
If you are an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen and plan to stay in Austria for more than three months, you must also apply for a Confirmation of Registration (Anmeldebescheinigung) within four months of your arrival, in addition to registering your address. In Vienna, the responsible authority is MA 35 (Municipal Department 35).
