Design and Implementation of Accounting-based MGT Information Systems - ERP-Control

Research Problem

In the year 2008 the market leading providers of ERP systems expanded their businesses by buying business intelligence providers. The market leader SAP bought e.g. Business Objects for USD 4.9 bn. and increased thereby its balance sheet assets by 1/3. Mergers like these require a huge effort to integrate the ERP functionalities with the BPM functionalities into one enterprise management information system.

Research Design

The problem of integrating business and management within a single software application is addressed by taking a stock and flow perspective which uses four pillars upon which the enterprise information system architecture is built. The 4-pillar framework is applied to the business and management (B&M) context to allow a semantic integration at all three architectural levels, i.e. the business and management, the information system and the technology architectures. The semantic framework can be used for structuring and solving vertical, horizontal and technological integration problems within an intraorganizational as well as an inter-organizational context. The overarching perspective of the B&M semantic integration framework makes it applicable for IT management related maintenance and development purposes as well as for the purpose of constructing and implementing new enterprise information systems on a green field basis.
