wiss.ORat Dipl.Ing. Fritz Pachowsky – Obituary

12. November 2025
The Institute for Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics mourns the loss of Dipl.Ing. Fritz Pachowsky, who passed away on November 12, 2025.

Wiss.ORat Dipl.-Ing. Pachowsky was born on January 15, 1940, in Brünnlitz, 50 km north of Brno. In the wake of the post-war turmoil, he moved with his family to Upper Austria, where he attended secondary school in Linz. He discovered his interest in flying at an early age and obtained his glider pilot’s license at the age of 16.

After graduating from high school, he began studying mechanical engineering at the former Technical University in Vienna in 1958 and worked as a research assistant at the former Institute for Lightweight Construction while still a student. He subsequently worked there as a research officer and served as interim director of the institute between the retirement of Prof. Müller-Magyari and the appointment of Prof. Rammerstorfer. Later, he headed the Department of Aircraft and Shipbuilding. He continued to lecture on aircraft construction at the Vienna University of Technology until the 2020s and also taught this subject at HTLs in Vienna and Eisenstadt.

Fritz Pachowsky remained an enthusiastic pilot and obtained, among other things, a private and commercial pilot’s license for multi-engine aircraft. He was a gliding instructor and worked as an expert and developer in the field of aviation.

On November 12, 2025, Dipl.Ing. Pachowsky passed away unexpectedly. With him, we have lost a valued colleague who was an extraordinary engineer with heart and soul. We will always remember him as a cheerful person and remain fondly connected to him.
