3rd place at ÖWGP Ph.D. award 2025 for Jacques Zwar

28. October 2025
At the doctoral colloquium of the ÖWGP, an Austrian science association for production technology, on 28 October 2025 at the Technical University of Leoben, Dr. Jacques Zwar reached the 3rd place at the Ph.D. award with his dissertation thesis.

Jacques finished his doctorate at TU Wien at the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics (ILSB) in the research group for Numerical Analysis and Design Methods, where he was advised by Univ.-Prof. Stefanie Elgeti.
In his thesis, titled ‘Shape optimization of CAD-compliant boundary-conforming microstructured geometries’, he demonstrated the design, analysis and optimization of periodic two-scale or microstructured geometries that can exploit new design possibilities in additive manufacturing. He put a particular emphasis on ensuring the compatibility and compliance of these designs with geometry representations from computer-aided design by employing functional compositions between splines. While this approach naturally leads to boundary-conforming microstructures, it also maintains geometric exactness, eliminating the need for computationally expensive meshing techniques.

We warmly congratulate Jacques on this impressive achievement!
