The Master Building Science and Technology is a two year program, which is divided into 3 semesters of full-time studies and 1 semester dedicated to the Master’s project (120 ECTS total). The curriculum consists of 9 core modules: “Science and Research Fundamentals”, “Building Physics”, “Building Performance Simulation”, "Tools and Media", "Building Controls and Diagnostics", "Building Informatics", "Building Ecology and Human Ecology", "Applied Research", "Master Thesis". These core modules are complemented by “Electives in Architecture”, "Concentration" and “Free electives and additional qualifications”.
72 ECTS are mandatory courses, 13,5 ECTS are electives and 4,5 ECTS are from the soft skills category (e.g. languages, presentation skills...). The Master's thesis counts as 30 ECTS. Graduation from the program is contingent on successful course exams and the completion of a Master’s project, which is documented in a thesis and defended in a final oral exam administered by a committee.

Q: How is the curriculum structured?

Q: How long does it take to obtain a degree?
A: The curriculum extends over 4 terms, during which students complete courses worth 90 ECTS credits and a Master’s project worth 30 ECTS credits.
Q: What kinds of courses exist?
A: There are VOs, UEs, VUs and SEs.
VO: (Vorlesung/lecture) The lecturer presents the contents and methods of a subject. At the end there is a written and/or oral exam of the material covered in class.
UE: (Übung/exercise) Students apply their knowledge and skills to specific problems. Grading is typically based on assignments.
VU: Lectures with exercises
SE: (seminar) Lectures may be combined with in-class discussions and student presentations. Students usually write a paper.
Q: When do I have to take a course?
A: We strongly recommend taking the courses in the order as shown on the chart above. Certain lectures have to be taken in the correct order, e.g. students can only take the Master Project Seminar if they have completed both the Research Design and Methods and Research Seminar lectures. This can be an issue for students starting in the summer semester.
