Software Carpentry – Shell, Git, Programming with Python


Software Carpentry aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills and skills needed to be productive in research.

This two-day hands-on Software Carpentry, öffnet eine externe URL in einem neuen Fenster workshop will cover basic concepts and tools. You will learn how to:

  • interact with the Unix shell for basic file system navigation and related task automation
  • program in Python (basics) by the example of a data analysis workflow
  • use version control with Git to efficiently track changes in text documents edited individually or in groups.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

Target group: 

The course is aimed at researchers who want to write small scripts or small programs in the course of a project and manage them in Git. 

Participants don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools, however, they are expected to bring technology affinity. They must also bring their own laptops with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.).
