Associate Professor Dr Maren Podewitz, opens an external URL in a new window has been assigned to the Institute of Materials Chemistry (E165) at the Faculty of Technical Chemistry as Associate Professor of Computer-Aided Reactivity and Selectivity since 1 December 2025.

CV: Maren Podewitz comes from Lower Saxony in Germany and studied chemistry at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. While working on her master's thesis, she collaborated with Prof. Markus Reiher's research group at ETH Zurich, where she moved after completing her studies to pursue a doctorate in theoretical chemistry with a dissertation on ‘Structure determining interactions in polynuclear metal clusters, opens an external URL in a new window’ in 2010. With the help of a DAAD scholarship, which financed her postdoctoral stay, Maren Podewitz moved to Prof. Ken N. Houk's Laboratory for Computational Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for a year in 2011. After two years working in industry as a quantitative risk analyst, she moved to the University of Innsbruck as a postdoctoral researcher in 2014 , supported from 2017 onwards by a Lise Meitner Grant, opens an external URL in a new window from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), where she deepened her research focus on catalysis and modelling of physicochemical properties of complex systems, extending to predictive chemistry. In 2021, she was awarded an independent FWF individual project, opens an external URL in a new window. In the same year, she secured a tenure track position on the topic of ‘Computer-Aided Reactivity and Selectivity,’ which she has now successfully completed with the qualification of Associate Professor. In 2025, she also received her Venia Docendi , opens an external URL in a new windowfor the subject of ‘Theoretical Chemistry.’ Maren Podewitz's research has also been recognised with the Chemistry Europe Fellow and the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award from the American Chemical Society.

Special functions at TU Wien: Since 2022, Maren Podewitz has been a substitute member of the Working Group for Equal Treatment Issues at TU Wien. She is also involved as a science ambassador for the OEAD, opens an external URL in a new window.

Her scientific home is the Theoretical Materials Chemistry Research Group (E165-03-1) within the Theoretical Chemistry Research Area (E165-03). There, she works on predicting reactivity and selectivity in catalysis and complex molecular systems using multiscale, computer-aided modelling approaches from theoretical and quantum chemistry.
