Upon Arrival Information
Welcome to Vienna! As a newly admitted international student, there are a few essential steps to complete upon your arrival. From finalizing your enrollment and registering your address to learning about public transport and safety in the city, this guide will help you get started smoothly. Shortly before and at the beginning of each semester, we also invite you to our Welcome & Orientation events to help you settle in and connect with fellow students.

Enrollment Completion
Once you have received your letter of admission, and completed the online application through the Admission Office, your final step in the admission process is to officially enrol at TU Wien. This process can only be done in-person at the Admission Office, and more information can be found here. Once you have completed your enrolment process, you can download your Confirmation of Studies (Studienbestätigung) in your student account under "Student Self Services", which you will need for other administrative tasks in Vienna.

Welcome & Orientation Session
IWEC organizes an in-person Welcome & Orientation Session at the beginning of each term, where important information about your first steps at TU Wien and in Vienna are discussed. The orientation also offers a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow international students and meet the IWEC team.

Address Registration
All new residents in Vienna are required to register their new address with the City of Vienna within three days of moving into your new accommodation. Once you have registered for your address, you will receive a confirmation of registration (Bestätigung der Meldung), which is an important document that you will need for several other bureaucratic tasks. It is very important that you have a registered address in Austria while you are studying at TU Wien.

Public Transport
For unlimited travel within Vienna, the Youth Ticket (under 26) costs €294 per year, while the Annual Pass for adults (26+) is €461 per year. For travel across Austria, the Youth Ticket (under 26) is €1,050 per year, and the Adult Ticket (26+) is €1,400 per year.

The ÖBB Vorteilscard, opens an external URL in a new window is a great option for students who want to travel cheaply across Austria. It gives you 50% off all standard ÖBB train tickets and quickly pays for itself. The card is available in Classic, Youth and Family versions and can be purchased easily via the ÖBB app, opens an external URL in a new window, online, or at ÖBB ticket counters.
Biking in Vienna
Vienna offers many great options for students to rent bikes and explore the city on two wheels! The WienMobil bike-sharing system, opens an external URL in a new window lets you grab a bike from fixed stations across all 23 districts.
If you need a bike for longer periods, consider subscription rentals like Swapfiets, opens an external URL in a new window or EDDI Bike, opens an external URL in a new window, which deliver bikes to your doorstep and include maintenance.

Safety in Vienna
Vienna, and Austria in general, is considered a very safe country. Emergency numbers to know are:

It is generally recommended to always carry your E-Card, student ID, and, if needed, passport or ID card. In public transport, ticket inspectors may check your ticket and ID.
